Walter’s office was on the far side of the palace grounds in the security headquarters. It felt good to be alone. No one followed him as he took the underground tunnels to buildings on the other side of the palace grounds.

“Your Majesty.” Walter held his stomach as he stood and bowed over his tidy desk. He put away a few papers and sat back down.

As Connor settled in his chair, he reached for the small book and squeezed it between his hands.

“I was a little surprised when Larry told me you were coming, Connor,” Walter began. “What can I help you with?”

Connor slid the book across the tidy desk. His hand remained on it for a second too long before he pulled it away.

Walter didn’t reach for the book. He leaned back in his seat and nodded to it. “What is it?”

“Maia let me borrow it. I’m not sure what it is. I can’t read it.”

“Maia?”

“It seemed important to her. She didn’t want to part with it. I don’t know why she let me have it.”

Walter leaned forward, but when he reached for it, his hand trembled and he jerked it back to his desk. Connor slid it closer to him, and Walter pushed his chair away from the desk, but his head leaned forward to get a better look. “Wow.”

“What? What is it?”

“I can’t believe Maia had one. This is an ancient text. It’s rare nowadays.”

“You haven’t even opened it.”

Walter pushed his chair away and stood. He leaned over the desk. His hand hovered over the small book, and he jerked it away again. The quick movements had him clutching his stomach again and wincing in pain.

“I’m sorry. This is a little more than I can handle at the moment. I never thought I’d see this book again.”

“You’re scared?”

Walter nodded. His eyes kept glancing to the book. “It’s a mysterious book. It can cut through the spirit like a knife.”

“Open it.”

Walter nodded with a nervous smile. “I’m afraid of what I’ll find if I open the book. I thought they were all destroyed.”

“Can you translate it?” Connor flipped it open for him and pushed it even closer.

Walter shook his head.

“But you can read it?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I know.” Walter nodded. “It’s complicated.”

“Explain it,” Connor demanded. He stood and pushed the book even closer to Walter.

“This book is from up north.”

“Minthe,” Connor answered, urging Walter to continue. The name of the kingdom haunted his thoughts almost as much as Maia did.

“How… how do you know that name?”

“Maia told me.”

Walter shook his head. “That should be impossible. The northern kingdom protects its secrets with magic. I can’t even say the name of that kingdom to you.”

Connor sat back in his chair and waited for more explanation. “You can’t say Minthe because of magic?”

“Not to you.” Walter ran his hand over his sweaty forehead.

“You can’t say that word, to your prince?” Connor’s jaw tightened, and his eyes narrowed at the man.

“Connor.” Walter shook his head and paced his small office. “If I tell you the truth, I’ll be fired.
